Jr. NBA - Ball Handling

a) Games

Rookie

  • Teamwork carry drill
    • two players, ball on their hips, hands up, walk out and back
  • Run to that line
    • coach tells players how and where to run, e.g. high knees to the 3-point line, backpedal to the baseline
    • progression - players are dribbling (Jr. NBA Canada - Geography)
  • Dribble freeze tag
    • 1 or 2 "it" players, can they tag everyone in 30 seconds
    • variation - Freeze tag (no balls)

  • Mr. Coach, what time is it?
    • halfcourt or fullcourt, coach on the baseline, facing away from players, who ask "what time is it", if coach answers with a time, e.g. 4 o'clock, players walk forward with that many right-hand dribbles, if coach says "game time", turn, chase and try to tag players, continue, repeat with left hand
  • Red-light game
    • coach calls "red light" (stop in triple threat), "yellow light" (walk forward dribbling), "orange light" (walk backwards dribbling), "green light" (run forward dribbling)

  • Capture the cones
    • one team in each corner of the halfcourt with cones, dribble to get cones from other teams, if coach tags a player carrying a cone, return the cone
    • variations (Jr. NBA Canada)
      • pirate treasure - 4 teams, fullcourt, no tagging by coach or protecting your corner
      • capture the cone - fullcourt, two teams, one at each end, return to your side without a cone if tagged (by the other team)

  • Dribble relay
    • right-hand dribble out and back, jump stop, hand ball to next player and high five, second round left hand, third round add any dance move after the cone going out

  • Up or down game
    • one team turns cones over, the other puts them back up

  • Over-under relay
    • players on each team are in a line, the first player takes 3 dribbles and passes the ball backwards overhead to the next player who takes 3 dribbles and passes the ball under the legs, the last player runs to the front of the line, continue until all players are back where they started

  • Swipers (no video)
    • see Rookie Practice 6 - two teams, one dribbling balls, the other trying to knock them away, hold a ball overhead if it gets knocked away, come back in the game if a teammate rolls a ball between your legs
    • Jr. NBA Canada - no teams, all players are dribbling, see Dribbling - Group circle knockout
  • Avoid the coach (no video)
    • see Rookie Practice 7 - coach at halfcourt (no ball) tries to tag players dribbling baseline to baseline, join coach if tagged
    • variation - no balls, players run
