Coaching Bio

See Swiss Hoops, and a Coaching Bio.

Eric Johannsen has head/assistant coached about 60 basketball teams, including high-school, club and summer teams, plus summer camps and community programs. He has founded a number of coaching resources, starting with www.hoopsplaybook.ca in 2007, and was Technical Director of the Nepean Blue Devils from 2009-10 to 2023-24. He has Train to Compete (In-Training) NCCP status.

Eric Johannsen began coaching with the Barrhaven (now Nepean) Blue Devils in 2001, and coached for 3 years until his wife got a posting to Switzerland, where Eric coached boys teams and summer camps for 5 years at a basketball club outside Geneva, and also coached the junior and senior boys high-school teams at an international school for 4 years. Highlights include assistant coaching a team that won the Swiss U15 championship in his first year, and head coaching the team that won U17 silver two years later (see Swiss Hoops). He obtained a Swiss Level 1 coaching licence.

Eric rejoined the Blue Devils on returning to Canada in 2009, as coach and Technical Director, and also became a community coach at Ashbury College, where he coached for 11 seasons (until Covid), including 2 years as junior boys head coach, and 7 years as assistant coach of the senior boys team, which won its city championship every year, and medaled at OFSAA 4 times, including gold twice. He also coached in the annual Ashbury College Community Program.

Eric was Technical Director of the Blue Devils for 15 years, also coaching 19 competitive teams, ranging from U10 girls (8x) to U12 boys to U19 girls (7x), including 7 overall EOBA champions. As Technical Director, Eric supported club coaches by running clinics and competitive tryouts, attending practices, and sharing coaching resources by email and in the Coaches Corner of the Blue Devils website. He has Train to Compete (In-Training) certification status, and was also club president for 4 years.

During the off-seasons, Eric helped coach in the uOttawa Gee-Gees competitive girls summer program for 6 years, and coached two years in the Ottawa Boys and Girls Club girls summer league.

Eric started coaching at John McCrae Secondary School two years ago, and has been head coach of the senior girls then junior girls basketball teams.

Eric founded the coaching website www.hoopsplaybook.ca in 2007, a Google Drive Coaches Library in 2011, a Hoopsplaybook Facebook page in 2020, and has created over 300 YouTube playlists from basketball videos available on YouTube.

Player development and youth basketball are points of emphasis. Attention to detail for skills and drills is shown in Keys to Shooting, Dribbling Series, Off-Season Workouts, Skills Checklists (plus extensive coverage of cutting-edge skills in Blog Posts), and Youth Basketball is a gateway to comprehensive resources including Jr. NBA, Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program, and Gooroo Youth Basketball.

I am a big believer in using the power of the internet to coach, which is why I founded this coaching website Hoopsplaybook.ca (in 2007), a Coaches Library on Google Drive, over 250 YouTube playlists, and a Hoopsplaybook Facebook page (which has 568 followers as of November 2022). I am also founder and admin for the Ottawa Valley Basketball Coaches Facebook Group. These internet resources are very useful in supporting basketball coaches locally, nationally and abroad.

I have been Technical Director of the Nepean Blue Devils since 2009, a position that has entailed running or organizing coaching clinics, running competitive tryouts, attending practices to assist coaches, and providing resources to coaches by email and, more recently, via the Coaches Corner on the club website.

Player development is one of my priorities. Pages on this website that show the attention to detail for skills and drills include Keys to Shooting, Dribbling Series, Off-Season Workouts, and Skills Checklists. I have also extensively covered individual and cutting-edge skills on my Facebook page, examples include posts on Kobe Pivoting, Jab Steps, Stop Separation, and Split (Drop) Stance (links are to embedded posts on this website).

Another priority is youth basketball, and the Youth Basketball section of hoopsplaybook.ca is a gateway to comprehensive coaching resources, including Jr. NBA, Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program, Mega Hoops, and Gooroo Youth Basketball. These are supplemented by my own youth coaching resources such as drills and skills checklists.up
