Defending
Memphis shell

Tony Barone

4 on 4 shell, start in the lane, close out on a whistle. You go out hard, you come back quicker. They deny penetrating passes, not guard to guard. They don't allow middle penetration, there are passing angles. Shrink the floor on defence.

(Option - to start, coach passes to an attacker)

Progressions

a) Static

Pass the ball around (allow penetrating passes to the wings), defenders jump with the ball and talk.

b) Basket cut

Give and go on a slot to wing pass, reverse the ball, repeat on the other side.

See Defending - Wootten Fogler.

c) Dribble penetration

After a slot-to-wing pass and basket cut, reverse the ball to the other wing.

4 drives baseline, trap the drive, low man X3 has to help, X1 rotates down.

4 can try to make a baseline pass to 3 or a skip pass to 1. X2 has to know what he is doing, he has to drop down, see the ball, and be able to take a skip pass to 1.

Progression - don't allow X2 to take the skip pass to 1.

See Defending - Pitt 4 on 4 penetration, Wootten horseshoe, Forcing left shell.
