Fast break
Florida 3 on 0

sketch

Billy Donovan

Individual player development within the offence (see the Florida 2005 fast break). Work on flowing into offence out of transition, miss or make. After 3 on 0, go 3 on 3 halfcourt.

Three players weave upcourt, never throw behind, no more than 4 passes.

Coming back, the point guard dribbles up the middle, the wings run wide, whichever side big 4 is on, he screens for 2, who curls for a 15-foot shot.

4 screens above the block so there is enough room to bump and fade, the point guard has to get in tight enough that he can make the pass on a fade.

When screens are done correctly, one of the two players is going to get a shot.

Progressions

a) 2 tight curls into the lane, 4 sprints away from his man to the baseline (his back to the baseline), giving himself an angle for a throw-back pass from 2 (bounce pass or over the top) and baseline shot.

In a game, 4 would anticipate the tight curl if he sees X2 chase 2 below the screen.

Dave Smart - If xcutter chases, the cutter curls tight (a collision with xscreener), the screener steps off to a 21 position, his back to the baseline, looking for a pass over the top from 1. If there is no pass to 2 or 4, the screener vacates to the perimeter if he is a shooter, otherwise he sets a second screen for the cutter to vacate.

b) 2 bumps and fades for a pass (his defender goes ballside), 4 seals his man for a pass from 2.

4 anticipates the fade if X2 goes over the screen. 4 starts to flash, stepping up the lane with his left foot, creating more room for a seal, and reverse pivots on his left foot on a pass to 2.

Dave Smart - 4 posts to the point, ducking up and in with his left foot to create a better angle for a pass from 2, and reverse pivots on the left foot on a pass to 2..

c) 2 bumps and fades but does not get a pass, 4 flashes to the elbow for a pass, 2 cuts backdoor for a pass from 4.

Option - 1 cuts for a hand-off from 4.

d) 2 pops behind the arc for a pass.

1 fades away, 4 cross-screens then flashes high for a pass and reverses the ball to 1.

1 dribbles middle to take away helpside defence, 4 sets a wide pin-down screen at the 2nd or 3rd marker, 2 walks his man down then in to shorten the space to his defender and comes off the screen shoulder to shoulder for a pass and shot.

The ending is the same as before. 4 will step back to the baseline if 2 curls. If X4 shows on 2 (4 doesn't see him out of the corner of his inside eye), 4 slips to the basket for an over-the-top pass from 1, who first ball fakes. Screening at the second marker (above the block) leaves room for a slip.

e) 2 pops behind the arc for a pass, 4 picks and rolls (2 can call for a ballscreen, e.g., by putting the ball between his legs). 4 comes up the lane to clear the baseline for 2 and make space for a slip if his defender shows. 2 comes off the screen with two dribbles (one dribble, hesitate, another dribble to create space), 4 rolls to the short corner. 2 can pass to 4 or drive and kick to 1.
