Defence
3-2 sliding zone Jack Bennett

Jack Bennett

See YouTube playlist - 3-2 sliding zone.

Unlike most other zones, the 3-2 sliding zone covers the perimeter with all five defenders.

Slider X3 takes the ball out front.

X4 and X5 start on the blocks.

Wings X2 and X1 play a little bit wider, don't let attackers get into gaps, but can anticipate flat passes out to the wings and get to a shooter.

High hands. You have to cover the ball hard, and be as energetic with your defensive stance and footwork as you are in man to man.

Keno Davis - Mix and match-up zone - X4 and X5 are up the lane, ready to protect and able to get in front of the post. Guards always have next pass, so X2 takes a pass to 3 or 4.

3-2 Gamecocks - it can look like a 1-2-2, or flatten it out so it is a true 3-2 zone.

Tim Jancovich - 3-2 zone - the point of pick-up is the 3-point line, but you can extend to play it much more aggressively. The number one job of the middle man is to keep the ball out of the high post.

3-2 Foster - X3 does not extend beyond the top of the key.

See Defences - 3-2 Tubby Smith, 1-2-2 St. Joseph, Toronto Raptors 3-2 .

X2 takes a pass to the wing.

X3 slides to the elbow area. They let the ball swing on the perimeter in this zone, consistent with the gap defence.

X5 fills in the middle to take away flash posts, X1 sinks.

X4 doesn't go out yet on 4, but he is playing big, he has to defend any post player before he goes to the corner.

Davis - X4 full fronts on the pass to 2, X5 protects against a lob pass.

X4 has to get to the corner with high hands and not give up the baseline. If anything make 4 go middle, X4 has gap help from X2, and X3 sliding down.

X3 slides all the way down and probably plays 3/4 on the block, Bennett doesn't know if he can get to a front. X3 can't be lazy. He can cheat back up if there is no low post.

X5 is giving him great help, in a helpside stance (parallel to the baseline).

If a pass goes into the post (e.g. X3 is late), they can double-team (see below).

Weakside X1 fills right into the lane (sinks a little further).

Davis - X4 attacks the ball, X5 protects the rim, X3 rotates down with a full front on the low post, X2 guards against the high post, he doesn't need to drop down and provide any more protection, he's worried about the next pass to shooter 3. There's no where for 4 to go, they've overloaded against us, we've overloaded against them.

Coach Mac - weakside X1 denies the high post.

Toronto Raptors 3-2 zone - slider X3 may need to close out on a corner pass if X4 is out of position or slow.

On a pass back out, X5 stays until X4 recovers to the block.

If they put a guy in the high post with X3 on the ball, X1 has to pinch that, and X3 has to play big (at the top of the key), don't give up a direct pass.

If 5 does get a pass, X5 steps up (the pass is from the right side), X4 is the baseline helper, and X1 lengthens out in his wing area.

The 3-2 zone is not as strong as a 1-3-1 when the ball gets to the middle.

Toronto Raptors 3-2 - the top three guys cover the high post and wings, and switch all middle ballscreens. Top defender X3 is careful not to over-extend. One of the wings covers the high post if X3 is on the ball.

See Defence - 3-2 Tubby Smith, also 1-2-2.

If 5 is a great scorer, on a pass to 2, X4 comes under and denies on the baseline side, X3 is dropping down, X2 sinks.

They've got a natural double-team if the ball goes in there.

If the ball goes into the post from the wing, they could get a triple-team on a great post player as long a X5 doesn't lose sight of 2.

This is a way to really neutralize a good post player. If there are really good perimeter players that he can pass to, Bennett would play man to man, which the 3-2 complements.

X1 takes a skip pass to 1, it's in his third of the court, that's straight-forward.

If a skip pass goes to the middle. X3 can't get there, X1 has to take it, then X3 bumps him back to the wing, and X5 has to get out until X1 gets there and bumps him back down.

All three defenders out front cover for each other so there are no uncontested looks. On a pass back out, it's everyone's responsibility to cover the perimeter, once you see a teammate has got the ball covered, bump him back to his normal area. It's organized scrambling.

Tubby Smith - X1 takes 1 on the skip pass, exchanging spots with X3.

Davis - even if 3 passes to 4, it's a tough closeout for X3 at the top, so X1 takes 1 and X3 goes directly to the opposite wing.
